Discovering the ultimate 911 is a total assault.
The obsession with aerodynamic efficiency is as assertive as on the racing cars, and the downforce is put at 312 kilos in road mode and 416 kilos in track mode. The GT2 RS weighs in at 1,470 kilos, which can be reduced by 17 kilos by opting for the Weissach package, which adds a carbon fibre roof and other lighter components.
The assault continues when the left hand turns the ignition key. The flat six snarls and settles down to an idle that's as loud as it is muffled, emanating from the titanium exhaust, which is more present and intimidating than the naturally-aspirated 4.0-litre of a Gt3. It's easy to get going, thanks in large part to the perfection of the PDK7 dual-clutch gearbox, which is just as at ease manoeuvring as it is under full load. The atmosphere on board is very 911 RS, an orgy of alcantara and carbon to great effect. Porsche extracts 750 Nm of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm from the twin-turbocharged 3,800 cm3 flat six, and power peaks at 700 bhp at 7,000 rpm. Specific power is 184 bhp per litre of displacement, a figure matched by the Ferrari 488 Pista,
Porsche has remained faithful to its basic technical recipes, with two variable geometry turbochargers, but the leap compared to the top 911s is enormous: +50 Nm and +80 bhp compared to the 997.2 GT2 RS, +120 bhp compared to the contemporary 991 Turbo S.
For the discerning driver freed from budgetary contingencies, the choice of the GT2 RS became passionately understandable in the light of its performance and exclusivity.
