While most of the world's most beautiful cars were designed by renowned Italian workshops or designers such as Pininfarina, Zagato, Bertone or Touring, there were also independent craftsmen. Hidden away in discreet coachworks in the heart of isolated villages, these masters of design brought their customers' boldest dreams to life. Among them was Carrozzeria ATL (Auto Tecnica del Lario), run by Giorgio Greppi in Colico (Lecco), in northern Italy, on the shores of Lake Como.
Working solely by ear and touch, these coachbuilders were capable of transforming an ordinary car into a sumptuous vehicle, intended for both ambitious young drivers in search of their next mount and wealthy gentlemen wanting a unique car to drive to their country estate. These craftsmen generally relied on tried and tested mechanical bases, which they then dressed up with aluminium bodywork, a national speciality.
Carrozzeria ATL (Auto Tecnica del Lario) designed this replica of the Disco Volante 'Fianchi stretti' (meaning narrow hips) in 1973, with all-aluminium bodywork and a 1900 chassis. It is powered by a 1975cc Alfa Romeo 1900 4-cylinder engine, incorporating a high-performance aluminium oil pump, twin spark plugs and twin Weber 40 DCOE 81 carburettors with double throttle. With an increased compression ratio, a reworked exhaust manifold and 115 bhp, it offers remarkable performance. Its front mid-engine configuration ensures optimum weight distribution. The car weighs just 750 kg.
It underwent a complete restoration between April 2022 and June 2025. As this is a unique racing car, plans were drawn up based on a 3D scan, and a special mould was made in a digital carpentry workshop. At the same time, as a safety precaution, the front chassis parts were replaced with original parts by Christophe Beal, a renowned French specialist in sheet metal forming (who won awards in California while working for a major Bentley and Rolls-Royce workshop), and the car's chassis was checked on a marble surface, with perfectly satisfactory results, as examined by renowned French expert Stéphane Bonoron. All the mechanical and electrical components, as well as the upholstery, fuel tank, wheels, etc., were also restored or replaced. The Plexiglas windscreen has also been changed and replaced by a windscreen made of Makrolon ©, a material that is resistant even to pistol bullets.
Registered and approved for road use, this replica, which is extremely rare on the market and unique in its 'narrow hips' configuration, will appeal to you as much on long rides on the open road as on the racetrack. It is also potentially eligible for major international competitions.
A truly exceptional toy, worthy of great interest, as the original with "narrow hips" was produced by Alfa Romeo on an experimental basis in only one example.
French collector's registration document.
