Description
Classic Car Design is offering this beautiful BMW Z3 M roadster. With low mileage, it is currently in very good overall condition, both inside and out. It is of French origin and has had only three owners. The suspension and drivetrain have been upgraded to create a refined and high-performance car, whilst addressing the minor imperfections of the original model.
Externally, one appreciates the Z3’s characteristic, curvaceous lines, with its beefed-up wings. The bodywork shows no notable flaws; the paintwork has aged well and retains a good shine. The M alloy wheels have been repainted black (the original diamond-cut silver-grey wheels are available). To further enhance the roadster’s stance, it is fitted with wheel spacers. The soft top, which folds down manually in the blink of an eye, is in decent condition; it is watertight but could do with some touch-ups to the fabric. A hardtop is supplied with the car for winter use.
Inside, the upholstery is in a condition consistent with the exterior: the dashboard, the M sports seats and the carpets are in good condition, with no tears or significant wear. Overall, the car gives the impression of having been well looked after.
Mechanically, the Z3 M features the complete engine and transmission from the E36 M3 Phase 2: the 3.2-litre S50B32 inline-six, producing 321 chevaux, mated to a 5-speed Getrag manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. It’s the famous formula that works a treat: ‘small car, big engine’. The stainless-steel exhaust system, including the manifold, gives it a bit more growl and finishes with the model’s characteristic four tailpipes. The engine has been remapped to produce 356 chevaux (measured on the dynamometer). To make even better use of this power, the drivetrain is fitted with a short-ratio final drive (3.91). On the chassis side, the car has been fitted with threaded strut mounts, combined with reinforced silent blocks and larger front and rear stabiliser bars: body roll is reduced. Acceleration and handling are significantly improved.
This 1997 Z3 M combines several key features that make this model stand out: an attractive overall appearance, a service history maintained through the BMW network up to 2011 and covering approximately 42,000 km, after which it was entrusted to Banet Sport, a recognised specialist in the brand, until 2022. It was Banet Sport that carried out the targeted improvements to the car’s dynamic handling. This is an opportunity to acquire one of the icons of the ‘M’ line-up.
