A piece of Toyota racing history – Celica GT TA22
Built in 1973, this Toyota Celica 1600 GT TA22 was entered into German racing early on and competed in 1973–74 in the DRM, the German touring car racing series at the time and predecessor to the DTM, including races at the Norisring, Nürburgring, and the 6 Hours of Spa. In endurance races, Klaus Fritzinger shared the car with, among others, Ove Andersson, who later became the head of Toyota’s motorsports division in Cologne.
In 1975, the engine was upgraded to a 2.0-liter displacement for competition in Rally Group 2. This was followed by numerous international rally appearances, including the Tour d’Europe, the Monte Carlo Rally, and the Bayerwald Rally. Particularly legendary: In 1978, Klaus Fritzinger won the Bayerwald Rally by a margin of just two seconds over Walter Röhrl in the Lancia Stratos—one of Fritzinger’s greatest personal achievements.
Years later, Fritzinger tracked down his Celica—which he had long believed to be lost—in Belgium, where the car was sitting in a barn. In 2013–14, the historic race car was extensively restored and rebuilt by Klaus Fritzinger and subsequently displayed in his showroom. After his death in 2015, his daughter Silke Fritzinger continued the Celica’s legacy at various classic car and historic rally events.
An authentic former DRM race car with an exceptional rally pedigree—formerly owned and driven by Klaus Fritzinger—and a fascinating historical artifact of German motorsport history. The car comes with many additional parts, including the original, overhauled 1,600 cc engine; short and long differential ratios; a second transmission; three sets of wheels; and other small components, as well as the DMSB vehicle registration certificate and the certificate of registration in Fritzinger’s name.
