Very rare car, built from a genuine RS1600, and the V5C & vin number verify this … been a rally car all of its life, rallying in the 70’s. Then in 1999 this car was reprepared for yet another adventure, stripped to a shell and sent to Gartrac for upgrades similar to World Cup rally Escorts from 1970, when Ford Motor Company won this prestigious rally with FEV 1H. London to Sydney rally in 2000 was the goal, 34 day event, 16,000kms, through 15 countries, with an entry fee of $36,000, with nearly 100 cars competing.
Brief spec.
FEV 2J … a nod to the original FEV 2H and the other FEV cars which Ford Motor Co. entered in the World Cup rally in 1970, In true spirit the car was built to exacting spec as those cars, with integrated roll cage, with the famous bars coming from the roof to tops of the front wings which triangulate back inside the cockpit and forward to the roo bars/bull bars also creating additional jacking points, lowered boot floor for 2 spare wheel etc. An air intake on the roof to accommodate the hot countries. As well as the signature bull bars and additional roll cage, also the famous individual rear lights for simplicity when on the event at the other side of the world. I am amazed at the condition this car is still in, the floors and Structual condition are very good. (Photos available)
After the rally in 2000 the car was given a coat of fresh paint on the outside only and parked up for many years. More recently various service work has been completed such as new brake/clutch cylinders, oils, gaskets etc. to keep the car on the button and ready to use. It drives very well.
The mechanical spec was built the same as the original cars for simplicity and service/repair durning the rally, an 1800cc all steel dry sumped Kent engine by Anderson race engines, thick wall AX block, narrow journal steel crank and steel rods, rally spec cyclinder head and full dry sump system. comp clutch, 5 speed ZF gearbox with dog leg 1st gear, Gartrac fully floating Atlas axle with 5.1 LSD, usual suspension upgrades with Bilsteins dampers, coil over & leaf springs on the rear, 5 linked. Ap racing 4 pot front brakes, disc brakes on the rear, hyd hand brake and bias pedal box. Large premier fuel tank in the boot with twin fillers on the rear pillars, twin pumps and filters. The usual heavy duty cross member, sump guards, diff guard etc, interior was fitted with lightweight kevlar seats, mounted with quick release fasteners for easy of access to rear of the car. Lightweight windows and slide system as per original cars, even the door cards are a copy fo the original cars. Twin cowl dash with aux gauges and stack dash, trip meter, intercom system and headsets. Option to take car on 13” mag minilite wheels or 15” minilite wheels. This is a very special little car, doubtful the original FEV World Cup cars will every come to the market for sale, this has to be the next best thing. Something different to the traditional Escort, to either rally, put in a car collection or take to shows, cafe’s etc. Sensible priced at £55k solid investment.
