How much does it cost to hire a rally car ? (Prices 2024)
By RobinB on 10 July 2024 RallyWhether it's for a regional, national rally or even more so in the French championship or other national championships (and even in Europe or globally), more and more drivers are opting for rentals to compete. Indeed, renting a rally car to participate in an event or even a full season offers many advantages compared to buying a race car. So, purchase or rental? What are the rates charged by rally car rental companies?
To find out more, we detail all this together in this article based on the new classes and groups of the FFSA / French MotorSport Federation.

Rent or buy? What are the advantages of renting in rallying?
- Reduced Initial Cost: Buying a rally car can be a significant investment, especially when considering high-end models like the R5 (Rally2). Renting a rally car offers a more affordable option for those who cannot or do not want to invest that much money in a race car.
- Maintenance and upgrades: Competition cars, such as rally cars, require regular maintenance and may need frequent upgrades to remain competitive. By renting, these responsibilities and costs fall to the owner or rental company, and you do not have to worry about them.
- Flexibility: Renting a rally car allows you to change vehicles according to your needs and budget without a long-term commitment. It's the ideal solution for a one-off experience in a dream car like an S2000 or a Peugeot 306 Maxi, whose purchase prices have skyrocketed. It also allows you to enjoy a competitive car that can compete for overall or class rankings.
- No Depreciation: Like road-approved cars, rally cars depreciate over time. By renting, you avoid the loss of value that comes with purchasing.
- Reduced Financial Risks: Renting reduces the financial risk associated with unforeseen events, such as accidents or regulatory changes that could make a purchased car obsolete or less competitive. You also do not have to manage storage or security, nor even the sale of the car.
- Support and Assistance: Most rally car rental companies offer technical support and assistance with mechanics and sometimes a performance engineer during events, which can be a considerable advantage for teams with limited resources (both human and technical). No more logistics or mechanics, enjoy a turnkey service, all you have to do is focus on driving! No more loading onto trailers, van trips, and post-race revisions! The car is made available to you at the event, and you just have to enjoy.
- Regulatory Compliance: Rally cars must meet strict standards and comply with constantly evolving regulations. Rental companies generally ensure that their vehicles comply and function correctly, removing one more concern for the team, which does not have to worry about this aspect. Typically, the rental company will take the car through technical checks at rallies, for example.

In summary, renting a rally car can offer greater flexibility, reduce costs and financial risks, while providing the opportunity to drive a top-notch vehicle without the responsibilities of ownership. It’s now easier to understand the enthusiasm for renting.
As much as possible, try to get feedback from people who have already rented racing cars. If you don't know anyone personally, check social media. Some rental providers can be unreliable, and it is sometimes better to spend a little more to benefit from the services of a recognized and reliable company. This can save you a lot of trouble and ensure a smoother experience.
Renting a rally car, how much does it cost?
It is often difficult to find precise information and rates since many parameters can influence the price of a rental: insurance included or not, meals, security deposit, deductible amount, assistance, fuel, number of tires (new or used tires), test session included, transport costs to the chosen event, loan of driver/copilot equipment…
Teams are reluctant to publicly display their prices for two main reasons. Firstly, they want to keep their pricing confidential from competitors. Secondly, and more importantly, prices can vary significantly depending on a multitude of factors, making it challenging to publish fixed rates.
In this article, we offer an average of the rates charged for renting a rally car, whether you are a beginner looking for a small car for your first rally (N1, N2, or N3) or an amateur and/or confirmed driver looking for a high-performance car to compete for a class or overall ranking (Rally2, Rally4…).
Regardless of the chosen package, your travel, rally entry, and license remain at your expense, with the rest to be negotiated with the renter. Be sure to also inquire about insurance and its conditions! (Off-road, mechanical breakdown…)
⚠️ Reminder ⚠️ : the rally rental rates below are provided for informational purposes and may vary greatly from one renter to another depending on the services offered and the expertise. A well-known renter will logically charge more than a new 1901 law association just starting out in competition rentals. Rates are inclusive of all taxes (VAT included).
