Unveiled in January 1990, the Lamborghini Diablo faced the most challenging task imaginable: carrying on the legacy of the Countach. The name, inspired by a legendary 19th-century fighting bull, foreshadowed its temperament, whilst the design by Marcello Gandini drew on the extreme proportions and iconic scissor doors of its predecessor, translating them into more fluid and modern forms. Behind the cockpit, the 5.7-litre V12 engine, producing 492 CV, propelled it to over 320 km/h, making it the first road-going Lamborghini capable of exceeding this threshold and one of the world’s fastest production cars at the time of its launch.
The first series represents the purest and most authentic interpretation of the design: rear-wheel drive, retractable headlights, a five-speed manual gearbox and an almost total absence of electronic aids, leaving it to the driver to manage – and enjoy – the power of the twelve-cylinder engine. It is precisely this simplicity – a product of a unique era for Sant’Agata Bolognese – that has made the early Diablo models among the most sought-after by collectors: not merely a supercar whose appeal remains undiminished, but a fundamental chapter in the history of the Bull.
