Tiga cars were constructed by the former Formula 1 drivers Tim Schenken and Howden Ganley's company in their premises at High Wycombe in England.
Tim Schenken and Howden Ganley, two former Formula 1 drivers, founded the Tiga brand in the 1970s, the name coming from the combination of the initials of their first and last names (Tim Ganley). Their joint venture assembled over 400 C2 category sports prototype chassis until it ceased operations in 1989.
Tiga cars were entered into major competitions such as the World Sports Car Championship, including the Le Mans 24 Hours, as well as the InterSeries in Europe and IMSA Lights in the United States. The duo thus made a major contribution to the development of sports-protos in the category below Group C1 during the 1980s.
In 1984, the Tiga chassis made its Le Mans debut in the C2 class. The next year, Gordon Spice, Ray Bellm and Mark Galvin (Tiga GC85) took the class win at the 24 Hours, finishing fourteenth overall.
Tiga recorded his best overall result in 1987, featuring twice in the top 10 with ninth place for Costas Los/Dudley Wood/Tom Hessert and tenth for John Sheldon/Ian Harrower/Thorkild Thyrring (third and fourth in the C2 class).
The 1986 Tiga models were the first to feature ground effects in IMSA Lights. With progressive modifications from 1986 to 1989, they were the driving force behind the championship. One of their advantages was the ease with which they could be updated from one year to the next and adapted to race in a choice of C2 or IMSA Light categories. Engines as different as the Mazda 13B, Cosworth DFZ, Chevrolet V8, Buick V6, Ford BDT and Porsche blocks were used. There were even Volvo and Ferrari blocks!

This particular machine – chassis serial '350' – was produced there early in 1987 to compete in the World Sports Car
Championship, co-driven by Duncan Bain/Neil Crang and prepared by McNeil Racing. The honeycomb-monocoque chassis car was entered by Dune Motorsport and made its debut at Silverstone in May, 1987, in a preliminary shakedown session in preparation for contesting the Le Mans 24-Hour race classic at the Sarthe circuit in France that June.
At Le Mans this car was running very consistently in a remarkable eighth position after 22 hours with only two hours left to run when disaster struck in the form of the crankshaft breaking in its 3-litre Rover-Buick 6R4 V6-cylinder engine. As many as seven Tiga cars ran at Le Mans that year, using a variety of engines from Rover-Buick V6, through twin-turbo 4-cylinder Volvo and Ford BDT-E Turbo to Porsche 956 Turbo, and three Cosworth-Ford DFL V8s! For the remainder of that season, the failed V6 engine was replaced by a 3.3-litre Cosworth-Ford DFL V8 unit. In 1988 the car was acquired by Robbie Stirling/Ross Hyett for the Group C2 endurance racing series.
In 1989 chassis '350' offered here passed to the USA without its Cosworth V8 engine, and was fitted instead with a Buick V6 for the IMSA GTP race series. There it was campaigned by Sydney 'Buzzy' Smith of Orlando, Florida. In 1997 the car was purchased by Hi Tech Performance of Painsville, Ohio and in May, 1998, it was sold on to David Paul of Bethlehem, Philadelphia. He then owned the car until 2005 when it was purchased by Richard Chester who re-imported it into the UK.
Tiga 287 chassis '350' since raced in Group C events every year, having been prepared by RCP Motorsport under the technical supervision of Nick Chester – Head of the Performance Group at the Renault F1 team.
Performance:
The car entered in the Peter Auto Classic races during 2024 with top finishes in the Group C2 class at Spa and Paul Ricard circuits, and at the Barcelona Espiritu de Montjuic and Spa Classic races in 2025. Following are results since acquired in late 2023:
• Spa Classic 2024: P1 in both races in class
• Paul Ricard 2024: P3 and P4 in class.
• Barcelona 2025: P2 and P3 in class.
This well-documented Tiga CG287 is a high-performance modern-era competition Coupe with strong Le Mans history. It is eligible for enjoyable international historic Group C racing and the regular Peter Auto and Master Historic Series take place in such legendary circuits as Spa, Nurburgring, Le Mans and Paul Ricard. During 2026, it will be the support race at Le Mans on June 2026. Gentlemen, start your engines.......
