It's not the rarest Porsche, but its striking lines and unmistakable character have won it the affection of Porsche enthusiasts. This highly sought-after model is a true collector's car, and one that is hard to find these days.
The 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster is the reflection of a free and casual era. Driving a Porsche 911 Speedster is a way of life. Can't you just imagine taking a trip to Italy and enjoying the dolce vita in a Speedster? Although we could spend hours wandering around, let's move on to the presentation of this model.
The history of the Porsche 911 Speedster
In 1983, Porsche developed the first prototype of a 911 Speedster, in the greatest secrecy, based on an SC cabrio. It was a one-off that would never be unveiled. The aim was clear: to resurrect this famous name in order to boost sales in the United States. However, it wasn't until 1987 that a concept based on a cabriolet with narrow wings and a shell covering the passenger compartment appeared at the Frankfurt Motor Show, in the style of a single-seater and in the spirit of Clubsport.
Porsche even announced that the Speedster could be entered in competition with a special configuration. In the end, nothing happened, and like many other Porsches that never saw the light of day, the Clubsport version remained at the prototype stage. The definitive version was presented a year later, at the 1988 Motor Show, for the 1989 model year. It was presented with a Turbolook body.
The Porsche 911 Speedster in more detail
Based on the 911 cabriolet, the 911 Speedster was produced with the widened wings of the Turbo. The windscreen is slightly lower than on the cabriolet, and the ends of the windows are rounded. What we particularly like about the Speedster, and what gives it its charm, is the double hump shell that covers the rear deck. We can tell you an anecdote about this attractive finish: did you know that Porsche made owners sign a waiver for the lack of watertightness of the soft top? This was because the soft top was lightweight and not very watertight, so owners had to certify that they were aware of this particular feature. Of the 2,274 examples of the Porsche 911 Speedster, 171 were produced with a narrow body, at the request of European dealers who feared that the Speedster would not sell well because of the price associated with the Turbo Look.
In terms of engines, as the Porsche 911 Speedster was based on the cabriolet, it was powered by the same engine. However, the 231bhp flat-six is not a criterion of choice when it comes to buying a Speedster. Performance takes a back seat, and this is more of a pretty model for cruising down the back roads. A fine collector's item in a way.
Today, finding a Porsche 911 Speedster of this vintage is very difficult because it is a highly sought-after model.
This model comes with 93,000 km and a full service history.
