1965 Ford Mustang Convertible

On 17 April 1964, Ford unveiled the Mustang at the New York World’s Fair and created a whole new category. With its long bonnet, short boot, four seats and an affordable price, it attracted 22,000 orders on the first day and saw sales of over 400,000 cars in its first year. The very first examples, assembled between March and August 1964 before production lines were halted for the switch to the 1965 model year, form a series that collectors now refer to as the ‘1964½’.
Our example is one of them, and its original manufacturer’s plate – still riveted to the door pillar – tells its story line by line.
- 76A: convertible body with standard upholstery.
- V: Sunlight Yellow, a light yellow colour offered exclusively on the 1964½ models and fitted to just 3.4 per cent of production, before disappearing from the catalogue in the autumn of 1964.
- 86: black vinyl upholstery.
- 09G: rolled off the production line on 9 July 1964, five weeks before the switch to the 1965 model year.
- 43: delivered new by the Rockford sales district in Illinois.
- 1: standard 3.00 final drive ratio.
- 6: C4 three-speed automatic gearbox.
Having been repainted, this example is now finished in red. The bodywork is well-aligned and the soft top operates perfectly. The interior and Pony upholstery are in very good condition. The handling is sound and the drive is pleasant, aided by front disc brakes.
The car’s history is well documented. Having set off from Illinois, it made its way to California, as evidenced by a tyre invoice dated 2000 in Chula Vista, near San Diego, at 18,089 miles. Imported and registered in France on 13 August 2009, it is now with its second French owner and holds a French classic car registration certificate.
The odometer reads 24,544 miles, or approximately 39,500 km. A full service was carried out in March 2026: oil changes for the engine (including filter), gearbox, differential and cooling system; replacement of the rear wheel cylinders with a drain and bleed of the braking system; full lubrication, inspection and adjustment of the ignition and carburettor settings, new spark plugs, and four new tyres.
Sold with its original 1965 Ford owner’s manual.
