The Porsche 911 964 series, introduced in 1988, represented a major turning point for the Stuttgart-based carmaker, with 85% of components redesigned compared to the previous generation. This innovation marked a clear evolution in both mechanical and technological terms, while retaining the unmistakeable classic design of the 911. The Carrera 4 version made its debut with all-wheel drive and a torque split of 69% to the rear wheels and 31% to the front, managed by a central differential. This system is derived directly from the Porsche 959, an extremely exclusive supercar.

One of the 964's most notable aesthetic innovations was the introduction of a retractable rear spoiler that automatically extended at 80 km/h and retracted at 10 km/h, improving aerodynamics without compromising the car's clean lines. The bumpers were also revised, in a deformable thermoplastic material with an aluminium support.

Mechanical and technological innovations

The Porsche 911 964 series featured electronically controlled front and rear differentials, with the option of locking them manually. In addition, the suspension was completely redesigned, adopting independent dampers with coaxial springs instead of the traditional torsion bars. The braking system is based on the Porsche 928 S4, with ABS and ventilated brake discs. This series has also introduced power steering and a new semi-automatic air conditioning system, which enhance driving comfort.

Another important innovation was the 4-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, which allowed both manual and automatic operation, ensuring greater responsiveness and reducing power loss during gear changes. In 1989, the rear-wheel drive version, the Carrera 2, was launched, available in three variants: Coupé, Targa and Cabriolet.

Special versions and engines

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Porsche 911, the 964 Giubileo was produced in 1993 in a limited edition of 911 examples. This festive version, based on the Carrera 4, was distinguished by its wide body derived from the 911 Turbo, but without the fixed rear spoiler, which was replaced by an automatic retractable rear spoiler. It was available in exclusive colours such as purple metallic and grey metallic, and featured a personalised interior with a commemorative plaque and other distinctive details.

Mechanically, the Carrera 4 and Carrera 2 versions of the 964 series were powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.6 twin-spark boxer engine, which produced 250bhp. The Turbo version, however, initially used the 3.3-litre engine from the previous generation, with a power output of 320 bhp, which in the Turbo S version rose to 381 bhp. In 1993, the Turbo version received a new 3.6-litre engine, which increased power to 360 bhp.

Production and success

The Porsche 911 964 series was produced between 1988 and 1994, with a total of 63,762 units manufactured. During this period, the 964 established itself as one of the most important models in Porsche's history, introducing cutting-edge technologies while retaining the iconic character and spirit of the 911.

The 1993 festive version, known as the Porsche 911 '30 Jahre', remains one of the most sought-after editions for enthusiasts, with a limited production run that makes it a collector's item. This version featured 'Turbo Look' bodywork without a fixed rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels and an interior finished with exclusive details, making it an elegant and powerful tribute to 30 years of the legendary 911.
