The Ferrari Challenge Championship began in 1993 with the Italian and European series. It was the 348 Challenge model that christened it. The model was derived directly from the 348 TB, the changes compared to the basic version were rather limited, an engine boosted to 320 bhp, 20 bhp more than the standard car, a different exhaust system, 'slick' tyres, i.e. smooth racing tyres, modified brakes and specific dynamic cooling intakes.

Naturally, the cars were equipped with the 'kit' of safety elements including a cage roll-bar, 6-point seat belts, fire extinguisher, front and rear tow hook and electrical circuit breaker. 1995 was the 348 Challenge's last year in use, the year in which it was joined by the F355 Challenge, which would definitively replace it in the following championship.
