These famous customers included :
Belgian importer Jacques Swaters (Ecurie Francorchamps), Charles Pozzi of Ferrari France and of course Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team.
Built to IMSA GT standards, the 512 BB Competizione was still clearly derived from the production car. The car was stripped down to the bare minimum to reduce weight, using polyester components. A great deal of work was carried out on the five-litre 12-cylinder flat-six engine fitted with four triple-body Webers fed by external air intakes above the roof, Borgo forged pistons, weighted and balanced connecting rods, large valves, racing camshafts and reworked cylinder heads. This version developed almost 470 bhp for a weight of 1,225 kg, braked by 4 large-diameter ventilated discs.
The Manselle experience was not a brilliant one, as the car lacked reliability and top speed, which justified the production of the more aerodynamically developed 512 BBLM, of which 25 examples were produced.
Our example, chassis 22083, was a special order placed in 1984 with the Modena body shop by a wealthy French enthusiast of the prancing horse marque. The engine was also built by an official subcontractor of the factory, Toni Franco, and was an exact and perfect reproduction of the 1978 GR4 Competizione, built by the same craftsmen as the original, with original parts and total conformity. The brand's specialist books and registers agree and note that this chassis number was transformed into a period Group 4.
History tells us that 30 vehicles were also subsequently modified by Bacchelli Villa, but only with bodywork kits. The invoices of the main players in this transformation at the time are in the file, as is a certificate from the Bacchelli e Villa bodywork signed by Mr Franco Bacchelli himself.
In 1987, Mr Gaetano Tortora from Aix en Provence, the car's owner, sold the car to Mr Tamisier, another collector from the south of France with only 1,500 kilometres on the clock. Unfortunately, he only enjoyed the car for a short time, as it suffered a major fire in the rear section.
In June 1989, the car was offered and sold by a Parisian auction house for the princely sum of 2.6 million francs to a Parisian dealer for investment purposes. Enzo Ferrari had just died a few months earlier, and the price of models bearing the Cavallino rampante skyrocketed.
In 1998, with the market calm and largely deflated, the dealer went bankrupt. His financial institutions recovered the car and waited for a better period to remarket it.
In 2004, there were rumours circulating in Paris that two BB 512s were for sale in a public car park, owned by a bank. One was as yellow as new and the other a competition model?
The lucky owner will maintain the jewel and take part in a number of historic re-evocations behind the wheel until 2023, when the odometer will read an incredible 4200 kilometres.
With its aggressive looks and deliberately excessive shapes, a masterpiece was born in the offices of Pininfarina. The commendatore wanted to find a worthy heir to the Daytona, but with its engine in a central rear position, the shapes of the bodywork were so beautiful and generous that the nickname Brigitte Bardot was later given to it, disguised as a BB Berlinetta Boxer for the public.
A great moment of egoistic driving in an exceptional atmosphere at the wheel, with an 8000 lap counter, roll bar, bucket seats, harness, competition tank, plexiglass windows, 9 and 13 inch rims and above all a free exhaust system, all homologated on the road!
