Buying a Kart Cross (new or used): how much does it cost?
By RobinB on 29 August 2024 Kartcross / AutocrossDreaming of thrilling moments behind the wheel of a Kart Cross? Whether for leisure or competition, this motorsport discipline attracts more and more enthusiasts. The thrills are guaranteed, and the costs, both for purchase and maintenance, remain relatively affordable. 💸
These small motorized vehicles are generally equipped with motorcycle engines and are extremely fun to drive. They can be purchased new or used. However, be aware: a specific regulatory framework must be followed for competitors.
In France, this framework is defined by the FIA for races under the aegis of the FFSA or by the UFOLEP for competitions organized by this federation.
Thinking of buying a Kart Cross but hesitating to get started? Renting for a weekend or a day, as well as driving courses in Sprint Car, offer an excellent overview of this discipline. So, ready to live the experience? 🙂
What is Kart Cross?
Kart Cross, also known as Cross Car or Sprint Car, is a type of automobile competition involving very specific vehicles: off-road karts.

These vehicles are designed exclusively for competition, so it's important to remember that a Kart Cross is not road-approved 😉
Competition categories governed by the FIA/FFSA:
- Junior Sprint: Minimum weight of 315 kg, Kawasaki ER6 motorcycle engine of 650 cm³ with 50 hp (engine restricted, modifications prohibited), for drivers aged 12 to 18.
- Maxi Sprint: Minimum weight of 315 kg, Kawasaki ER6 engine of 650 cm³ developing 72 hp.
- Super Sprint (formerly Division I): Minimum weight of 320 kg, 600 cm³ or 850 cm³ motorcycle engine (Yamaha, Kawasaki, or Suzuki), developing 125 hp.
- Sprint Girls: Same regulations as the Super Sprint category, exclusively for female drivers.
Competition categories governed by UFOLEP:
- Open: Engines from 501 to 600 cm³ or MT09 engine of 847 cm³.
- ER6/SV: Engines of 649 cm³ (Kawasaki ER6 N or F) or Suzuki twin-cylinder engine up to 650 cm³ maximum.
- ER6 Restricted: Exclusively Kawasaki ER6 N or F engine of 649 cm³, restricted, reserved for drivers aged 15 to 18.
- 500: Engines up to 500 cm³.
- 602: Original 2CV engine with a specific restrictor, accessible from age 12.
Kart Cross competitions are generally held on the same circuits as Auto-Cross or dirt track racing, disciplines where prepared cars race on dirt tracks.

Kart Cross is an excellent way to learn to slide on dirt, master techniques like steering and counter-steering, and manage the weight/power ratio of these vehicles. It's an ideal preparation for rally driving, for example!

What are the differences between Kart Cross and traditional karting?
Kart Cross, like traditional karting, is a single-seater vehicle with four wheels, but their preferred terrains are different. While karting (or "go-karting" in Belgium and Quebec) runs on smooth asphalt tracks, Kart Cross is practiced on off-road circuits. These tracks, scattered with natural obstacles such as dirt, mud, sand, and sometimes paved sections, also feature varied terrains — hills, bumps, and other obstacles — that challenge both drivers and their machines 💪
Designed to handle these tough conditions, Kart Cross is equipped with a protective body and suspension specially designed to absorb terrain irregularities. Its tires, fitted with large treads, provide optimal traction on the most demanding surfaces. Its structure is based on a robust tubular chassis reinforced with a roll cage to protect the driver.
Conversely, traditional karting relies on being close to the ground to offer maximum stability and grip on asphalt. Without suspension, it features smooth tires that maximize performance in corners on paved tracks. Each type of kart is designed for its intended terrain, offering very different driving experiences.

Buggy and Kart Cross: what are the differences?
Though often confused, the terms "buggy" and "kart cross" refer to off-road vehicles with distinct characteristics. While both feature a protective body and suspension suited for rough terrains, the buggy is distinguished by its larger size and greater weight, often double that of a Kart Cross.
The Kart Cross, characterized by its single-seater, compact, and minimalist design, is built on an exposed tubular chassis, stripped of any superfluous bodywork. Designed exclusively for one driver, it weighs about 300 kg, a lightweight compared to the more robust buggy.
In terms of powertrain, the differences are also significant. Buggies, available in 4x4 or 4x2 versions, often feature engines borrowed from touring cars or powerful motorcycle engines like the Hayabusa. In contrast, Kart Cross vehicles are powered by motorcycle engines with a displacement capped at 652 cm³, mounted at the rear and driving the rear wheels. These engines typically come from renowned models such as the Kawasaki ER-6, Z650 or ZX600, Yamaha MT07, MT09, and YZF R6, or Suzuki GSXR and Honda CB500 and CBR600 🔥
Buying a new or used Kart Cross
Before purchasing your Cross Car, you'll need to decide between a new or used model. The second-hand market is particularly dynamic in this discipline. Each option has its pros and cons to consider.

Should you buy a new or used Cross Car?
Purchasing a new Kart Cross guarantees a higher quality of materials, particularly regarding the powertrain and equipment. A new Cross Car offers better reliability and the warranty provided by the manufacturer. This choice is particularly suited for drivers aiming to participate in high-level competitions.
Additionally, new models are often equipped with the latest innovations in technology and safety. The vehicle will not have suffered any wear or damage; however, its cost is significantly higher.
Opting for a used model generally allows for significant savings on the purchase price. This option can be attractive for beginner drivers or those with a more limited budget.
However, you should check the general condition of the vehicle and the care given to its maintenance by the previous owner before completing the purchase. The kart may require repairs, and mechanical parts may show more wear. The engine may also need a service. Some mechanical knowledge could help you save on this aspect, as mechanics in this field are relatively simple.
All safety components should also be inspected. If the desired used model is old, you may need to make modifications to comply with current regulations.
Buying a Kart Cross: How much does it cost?
As usual, the price varies depending on several factors such as the manufacturer, the year of production, the general condition (new or used), and the technical specifications. The inclusion of additional parts or accessories sold with the kart may also affect the price.
Generally, the budget for acquiring a used Cross Car ranges between €3,000 and €20,000. For beginners, many second-hand models in good condition and ready to race are available for around €6,000 (see here for Kart Cross listings).
For a more recent and higher-performing model, expect to pay around €15,000.
For a new model, the price can quickly exceed €20,000. Depending on the build quality and the engine used, the price may vary. This amount does not include costs related to purchasing driver equipment, protective gear, additional equipment, or the license and participation fees for races.
Building Your Own Kart Cross
For DIY enthusiasts and fans, building your own Kart Cross is a feasible option thanks to the plans and kits available from specialists. Many resources, both free and paid, provide instructions on assembling a Kart Cross from simple metal tubes.
This approach is ideal for leisure and the enjoyment of building, but it is crucial to adhere to technical specifications, especially for competitive use. However, building a kart from scratch may not be cost-effective or guarantee optimal performance.
Rental Rates for a Race Weekend
It is also possible to rent a Cross Car to participate in official competitions or simply to experience the thrill for a day or weekend. Prices vary depending on providers and offers, but you can estimate that renting for a competition will cost around €1,000, or more if you want additional services like a mechanic during the race. The price of driving courses, depending on the time offered, ranges between €100 and €600.

The advantage of renting is being able to race with a vehicle that has been maintained by a professional, without long-term commitment. It will be more reliable than a second-hand model that you will have to maintain yourself. You also do not need to worry about logistics such as transportation.
Where to Find and Buy a Kart Cross?
To buy a used Cross Car, you can check specialized listing sites like GoToTheGrid or Parc Pilotes, as well as general sites like Leboncoin. There are also many Facebook groups dedicated to this discipline.
Some manufacturers also offer second-hand models taken back from their customers, in addition to new models suited to different budgets and needs.
