The 911's days are numbered!

That's what Porsche's managers thought at the dawn of the 1970s. So they looked at other configurations, and that's how a number of Porsches equipped with a front engine came into being.

After the medium-displacement 924, Porsche wanted a more substantial model, a truly powerful GT. This was to be the 928, a genuine engineer's car with many avant-garde solutions. The 928 was powered by a 240hp 4.5-litre V8 engine and, to balance the weight, the gearbox was placed on the rear axle. In terms of suspension, the rear axle benefits from multi-link steering, the first of its kind on a production car. Thanks to these highly advanced features, the Porsche 928 presented in 1977 was a remarkably fast, reliable and hard-wearing grand tourer. In 1979, the 928 S was presented, with a 4.7-litre engine developing 300bhp.

The 928 S4, meanwhile, made its debut in the second half of 1986, the 1987 model year, with an updated version of the 5.0-litre V8 boosted to 320bhp combined with 16-valve twin-camshaft cylinder heads.
Some fairly significant styling updates, including new front and rear bumpers and a new rear spoiler gave the car an even more avant-garde look.
With its original and totally unfashionable design, the Porsche 928 enjoyed a long career, only disappearing from the catalogue in 1995, with a total production run of almost 61,000 examples.
