In the 1970s Formula 5000 was a professional open wheel road racing series. Engine displacement was limited to 5 liter (5000cc) with the Chevrolet 302 Z/28 engine being the most popular engine choice. The car architecture was simple: an amidship engine placement in a single-seater, open-wheel chassis using an American stock block engine. They proved to be lethally fast with an ultra-high-horsepower engine nestled in a light car. They were an audio and visual treat with large rear wings, wide tires and loud exhaust.

The Formula 5000 series raced on ROAD COURSES in North America with parallel series in Europe and Australia/NZ. Formula 5000 was the premier open-wheel series in the United States during its eight-year reign from 1968-1976. Jointly sanctioned by both the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and USAC (United States Auto Club), the Formula 5000 series showcased some of the best international and American drivers including Mario Andretti, Al and Bobby Unser, Danny Ongais, Scooter Patrick, Alan Jones and Brian Redman.

Several constructors built F5000 cars but without doubt the most successful was the type T332 from Lola Cars Ltd of Huntingdon Cambridgeshire England. This Lola was constructed in the summer of 1974 and is one of 36 built from 1974-76. It was raced in the Sports Car Club of America’s professional Formula 5000 series by Indy driver Jerry Karl for car owner James LaBar.
