A very rare Formula Jr, one of a few American designed and built cars. Noted California sports car racer and constructor, Joe Huffaker, joined the British Motor Cars in San Francisco in 1959 to start a competition department. Early results were design and construction of the BMC Formula Jr. and the Genie Sports Racers. In 1964, Huffaker helped design the Indy “500” MG liquid suspension specials, for which he was awarded an Engineering Design Award. Huffaker left BMC in 1967 and formed his own company, Huffaker Engineering, which still exists today as a highly respected engine builder and race prep shop operated by his son, Joe Huffaker Jr. This Formula Jr. is chassis #9. It is a laid down engine design, about 45°, now powered by a Weber carburator race Prepared 1100 BMC engine and a right hand shifter BMC transmission. It is updated with front disc brakes., Otherwise, the car appears to be correct to original, including original BMC alloy rear wheels and Minator alloy front wheels fitted with period correct Dunlop Green Spot racing tires. The car is fully restored.

The car is a proven competitive and race winning car at vintage races. It includes documented with timing sheets and race result reports for many of the Midwest and East Coast race tracks. In the 1994 Manapasto Championship Series, it had first place wins at Morosso Motorsport Park as well as Elkhart Lakes Road America. It had a second place at Road Atlanta. And a third at Mid Ohio. It was a consistent top three or five car at Lime Rock Park, Watkins Glen, Grattan, Michigan and Blackhawk Farms. The car comes with extensive records, including an ownership chronology beginning with the original bill of sale to Overseas Motors in Houston, TX, signed in 1960 by Joe Huffaker for BMC as seller, the car was owned and raced mostly in the US.

The car was owned for a couple of years by Rodney Tollhorst in Kent, UK, where it was referred to as the " Yank Car”. It was purchased and returned to the US by the late Dr. Keith Brown of Ann Arbor, MI in the late 80s. I acquired the car from Dr. Brown's estate earlier this year, intending to race it. Unfortunately, being a rather large framed man ( 6'1”, 190 lbs, size 11 feet), I do not fit in the car and there is no space to enlarge the foot box to fit me.

There is an SVRA log book for the car and other extensive records, documents and receipts from restoration and maintenance and other miscellaneous that go with the car. A very rare and historical car for vintage racing exhibitions and or a “cool” addition to a collection. Available competitively priced $43,900 U.S. Sold on bill of sale. 574-529-0375. shrikeracer19@gmail.com
